Two people stand close together, each with a small black script tattoo on the upper chest, one reading To infinity and the other and beyond. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the ink is black on skin. Both wear dark or pale tops, and their hands rest on their chests, which keeps the framing tight on the tattoos.

Dear Marguerite, the post came over on the Tuesday boat, so you will have had my last letter by now and be cross with me for not saying more about the glass. I have fixed it. Father says the gulls knocked a pane out in the gale, but I know it was the cat, who sits on the sill and watches the Dunmere road as if someone is coming up it.

You asked whether the kingdom still sends its couriers across the bay now that the new harbour is open. It does, though they wear grey coats and carry their letters in tin boxes, and they do not stop for tea anymore. Yesterday one of them left a parcel at our door addressed to my name, which I did not expect, since nobody here has ever sent me anything but bills. Inside was a brass plate no bigger than a playing card, and scratched on it in a hand I did not know were the words TO INFINITY, and beneath, in smaller script, AND BEYOND.

I went down to the shingle with it and looked for the sender until the tide came in over my boots. There was only the boat, going out, and a man at its stern raising his hat as if he had been waiting all afternoon to be seen doing it. I have pinned the plate above the kitchen table where the light from the window catches it. Father reads it every morning over his porridge and says nothing, which for him is a kind of blessing.

Write back soon and tell me whether your mother has finally forgiven the bakers. Your loving sister, Ada.
