Two script quote tattoos on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, each with a single line of black script on the ribs, one reading "To infinity" and the other "and beyond". The lettering uses thin, even strokes with a flowing cursive hand and light shading. The photograph is black and grey, with a partly visible coloured tattoo at the top right and no faces shown.

You have the ticket in one hand and the tin in the other when the officer at the booth asks whether you have anything to declare, and you nearly laugh, because the only thing you are carrying across is half a sentence. Your sister is already through the barrier on the far side, leaning on the rail of the footbridge and pretending she is not watching you. The two of you agreed on the phrase at a kitchen table in Hull when you were nineteen and drunk on cheap cider, and the agreement was that neither of you would ever finish it alone.

The officer taps your passport against the glass. Purpose of travel? You say a funeral, which is true in its way. Your mother's ashes went into the sea off Scarborough in March, and she had asked for the words to be said at the rail, not sung, not read from a card. You had not planned to bring any of her up to the border. Yet here the tin is, rattling faintly in your coat pocket every time the wind catches the door of the booth.
The barrier lifts. You walk the length of the footbridge with the gulls shrieking below, and your sister does not come to meet you until you reach the middle, where a painted white line runs across the concrete like a seam. She stops a foot short of it, hands in her jacket, and waits the way she waited at school gates when you were late. You unscrew the lid of the tin. Nobody behind you in the queue says anything, and the wind takes the first of your mother into the grey air over the water.
You say the first half of the sentence, and your sister, who has always been the faster of the two of you, steps over the white line and finishes it for you.
