Matching city skyline tattoos on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, with their shirts lifted to show identical city skyline tattoos on their right ribs. The skylines are drawn in thin, single black outlines of varying building heights, with no shading. The muted indoor setting and denim clothing sit in the background and lower frame.

The number 14 bus stopped at the top of Cutler Hill every evening at ten past six, and from there you could see the whole of Harrow Quay laid out below like a row of teeth. Bea had looked at it a thousand times before she thought to draw it. Nell had the back of a chip shop receipt flattened on her knee while the driver argued with a man about a travel card.

They drew it badly at first. The mill tower came out too fat, the church spire leaned as if it had been drinking, and Nell said the cathedral looked like a pencil someone had sat on. Bea said that was the cathedral's fault. They kept at it through three stops, pressing hard enough to dent the paper, until the outline on the receipt ran in one unbroken line from the gasworks chimney to the crane at the far dock.
Nell moved to Leeds in March for a job at a printing works, and in the first week she sent a photograph of a kitchen window that looked onto nothing but a car park. Bea copied the skyline onto the back of her gas bill and taped it inside the bus shelter glass, where it stayed until someone scraped it off in June. Nell said she had her own copy folded into the lining of her good coat, and it had gone soft at the creases like old cloth.
Years later the bus still stops at the top of Cutler Hill at ten past six. Bea gets off there now with her shopping and looks down at the quay, then at the new flats standing where the mill used to be, and checks the line against the one in her head. It is nearly right. The only thing wrong with it is that Nell is not beside her to say so.
