Two people in black and grey bras show matching fine line script tattoos on their ribs, reading To infinity and and beyond.

Matching "To infinity" and "and beyond" script on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side, each with a single line of fine script tattoo on the side of the ribs, below a bra strap line. The left tattoo reads To infinity and the right reads and beyond, so the phrase is split across the pair. The linework is thin and dark grey to black with no shading or colour, and the photo is taken at close range with both people's hands holding their tops.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift at Ashcombe General had a fifth button that nobody pressed. Its brass had gone green and the wire behind it was cut years before the new wing went up, so when the night porters talked about it they lowered their voices, the way people do about a dog that has bitten someone once. Maud Pryce had worked the night desk for nineteen winters and said the button did nothing at all, and that was the point of it.

Her friend Win Okafor came on at ten with a flask of tea and a paper bag of broken biscuits, and she did not believe a word. Win liked to test things. One night in February, with the corridors quiet and a boy asleep in bay three, she pressed the fifth button while Maud was signing for linen. The doors closed. The lift climbed past the fourth floor, past the fifth, and stopped with a soft bump at a landing that had no number painted on its door.

They stood in a corridor lit the colour of weak milk. A nurse they had never met was wheeling a trolley with no wheels, and an old man in a dressing gown lifted one hand to them as if they were late for something. Maud did not ask questions. She took the ledger from under her arm and wrote the time, and under it, in her small slanting hand, she wrote the first half of a line she had heard her mother say at the bus stop for forty years.

Win read it over her shoulder and laughed, and then she took the pen and finished it, so the two halves sat one above the other on the page. When they got back to the lift the fifth button was warm under Maud's thumb, and it stayed warm until the dawn shift came in and the floor numbers went back to where they belonged.
