The tin went across the Hollin cut on a length of brown fishing line every Tuesday, hauled hand over hand by whichever sister had the stronger wrists that week. Nell kept the lock on the north bank and Bet kept the one on the south, and between them lay a mile of reed and cold water their father had dug, which neither of them would walk.

Nell's notes always began the same way, in the looping hand she had learned from the vicar's wife. Together forever, never apart, she wrote, and then underneath, the price of paraffin or a joke about the heron. Bet answered in her cramped slant, squeezing her lines into the margin the way she squeezed everything: the eggs, the fare, the money for the roof. Maybe in distance, she wrote one week, but never in heart, and she drew a small lock beside it so Nell would know which lock she meant.

In February the cut froze to the bottom and the line snapped under the weight of a sodden tin. Nell found the broken end caught on the sluice gate and sat on her upturned bucket for an afternoon, not writing, listening to the ice tick against the timber.

On Tuesday there was a second tin hanging from the hook on her gate, dry and tied with string. Inside was a note in Bet's slant that said only: I walked it. Mind the third plank. Nell found the plank rotten and the mud up to her knees on the far bank, and she laughed until the lock gates creaked.
