Matching infinity and quote tattoos on shoulders

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand back to back, each with a black script quote on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The left tattoo reads "I'll be the wings that keep your head in the clouds" beside an infinity symbol and a feather, and the right reads "I'll be the anchor that keeps your feet on the ground" beside an infinity symbol and an anchor. Inset close-ups on the right show the two designs in detail, all in black and grey ink.

Tom, the kettle's on and the gulls haven't woken yet, so this is the only quiet I'll get before the boats go out. Dad's boots are still by the back door where you left them. I haven't moved them. Mum says I'm being soft, but she's the one who keeps lifting the lid of your tin of spare buttons to check they're still there.

You asked me on the quay what I'd do if you didn't come back for the summer. I told you to mind your own business. The truth is I'd probably keep mending the nets on the step and tell everyone you were off being clever in a city. Some of that's true. Mostly I want you to know the knot you tied on my wrist when we were small is still there. Granddad called it the endless knot, a loop with no start and no finish. I kept meaning to tell you it was never a promise about where you'd go. It was only about coming back to the same end of the rope.

The tide turns at six. Gerry's lad reckons the ferry will cross in the fog, so if the horn goes before light, that's just the boat being daft and not a sign of anything. Write when you're settled. Send a feather if you find one on the moor, the way you used to, and I'll take it as proof you're still looking up.

Your loving sister, Maud
