Matching script quote tattoos on shoulders

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind on a sunny outdoor surface, each showing a long black script quotation tattooed across the top of the shoulder. The lettering is a flowing cursive with clean, even linework and solid black ink, and the two lines are arranged to read as a pair. The shoulders fill the frame against a plain grey ground, with the lettering angled slightly upward toward the outer edge.

Dear Nell,

The skipper finally let us put in at Scarborough for the weather, and I spent the whole afternoon on the quay with a mug of stewed tea, watching gulls fight over a crate of rotten mackerel. Your mum says you've taken the bus to Leeds for the job at the print works. I told her that's a good thing. I'm not sure I meant it, but I'm writing it down now so it's true on paper at least.

Remember the summer we painted the old dinghy in your dad's shed and you wrote on its transom that you'd be the one going over the horizon? You made me promise to stay on the mud, holding the rope. I said somebody had to, or we'd both end up in the Humber. I've been thinking about that a lot out here, with the swell lifting the hull every eleven seconds and nothing to look at but grey.

Last night the chain ran out in a bad squall off the Dogger and I was the one on the winch, hands raw, shouting at Tomasz to hold. Nobody died. We brought her up with a torn net and a catch worth less than the diesel. Afterwards I stood on deck and thought how you'd have laughed at me, all arms and nerves, the anchor keeping the boat from drifting. You always said I was the sensible one.

Come up when the job lets you. I'll be on the pier with my boots still wet, pretending I'm not waiting.

Love, Jo
