Matching infinity quote tattoos on shoulder blades

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side seen from behind, each with a matching tattoo on the upper back below the shoulder blade. Each design reads a line of script, with an infinity symbol below it: the left has a feather and the right has an anchor. The linework is clean and the ink is black with soft grey shading, and the close framing keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Dear Nell, the gull has taken the second slice of the morning loaf again, and I have decided to forgive it, because you are the one who taught me that anything worth keeping is worth a bit of theft. Mum rang at six to say the glider club at Harrowby Edge has you down for a solo on Saturday if the wind holds. I told her the wind has never once held for anybody in our family.

I know what you are going to say, that I always do this, that I stand at the bottom of the hill with my arms folded and count the seconds until you come back down. You are right. Last Tuesday I found the old chart of the coast in Dad's drawer, the one with the pencil ring round Scarrow Bay where he used to say the thermals gather off the chalk. I pinned it above the ovens, next to the tide timetable and the paper bag of cardamom you keep forgetting to collect.

Here is the thing I have not said. When we were small and you walked the harbour wall with your arms out, I was always the one with a fistful of your jumper, not because I thought you would fall but because I liked being the weight that made you come back. I still am. Someone has to be. I will keep the ovens lit and the kettle on, and when you come in with your face red from the wind I will pretend I was not watching the sky the whole time.

Come home for tea on Sunday. Bring the logbook. I have kept your favourite bun warm since half four, and it is still sitting on the sill where the light comes first.
