Matching script tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed together, each carrying a single line of black script. The upper arm reads "mom, i love you" and the lower arm reads "i love you more", with the lettering set at a similar angle on both. The linework is thin and even with no shading, on a light skin tone against a plain, softly lit background with a pink lace top visible at the bottom edge.

Rain had been coming down on the Saturday market since eight, and Dilys had given up on the awning, which sagged over her trestle table of secondhand fountain pens like a wet sheet on a line. She wiped each nib with a square of chamois and set it back in its tray. Next door, under a tarpaulin lashed to a van, her daughter Nell was weighing loose-leaf tea into paper bags and humming something off key.

A man in a yellow cagoule came over to look at a Parker with a cracked barrel. He asked whether anyone still wrote letters with pens like this, and Dilys said her own mother had, every Sunday, on blue airmail paper, until the Sunday she didn't. The man bought the Parker anyway, for the nib, and paid in coins that were still warm from his pocket.

At half past twelve Nell appeared at the edge of the stall, dripping, holding out a tea label she had written on with a biro. It said mom, i love you in her quick slanted hand, the letters all leaning the same way like people walking into wind. Dilys took a receipt book from under the till, tore out a page and wrote underneath in her own careful ink: i love you more. She handed it back across the gap between the two stalls.

Nell read it, laughed, and tucked it into the pocket of her apron. The rain eased to a drizzle and then stopped, and the wet pavement began to show the reflected shapes of the stalls, the crooked awning, the two women standing in it with their sleeves pushed up.
