Matching sister quote tattoos on forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed side by side, each carrying a line of cursive script: Friends by Chance on the upper arm and Sisters by Choice on the lower. Each phrase ends with a small outlined heart, and the lettering uses smooth, even linework with light shading. The photograph is black and white, with a striped top and a beaded necklace visible at the edges, and the composition is close and centred on the ink.

The vending machine on Ward Nine had swallowed Ruth's pound again, so she kicked the base in the spot that sometimes worked, and it did not. Jo leaned over her shoulder with the clipboard, tapping bed numbers with a biro that had nearly run dry. "Leave it," she said. "Mr Hale wants water, and you're not getting a biscuit out of that thing tonight."

They had met in 2009 on a rota that someone in the trust office had typed wrong, putting two strangers on the same twelve-hour nights for six months. Friends by chance, Jo liked to say, the way other people said grace before a meal. When the error was corrected, nobody required them to keep meeting. Ruth asked her anyway, on a bench outside the chapel, and Jo said yes before the question had finished.

At three, Mr Hale began asking for his wife, who had died in March, and Ruth sat on the edge of his bed and told him about her allotment until his breathing slowed. Jo wrote up the observations and did not interrupt. By four the ward had gone quiet in the way that frightens new students, and the only sound was the pump counting down somewhere behind the curtain.

When the handover sheet was finished, Jo pulled next month's rota onto the desk and found their names. She crossed out the trust's neat block of shifts and wrote them herself, side by side, with a small heart beside each pair. Then she pressed the clipboard against Ruth's chest so she could read it before the lights came up.
