Matching sister quote tattoos on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side, showing their ribs and sides, each with a single line of thin black script. The left line reads 'There is no better friend than a sister...' and the right reads '...and there is no better sister than you', so the two lines complete each other. The ink is dark and crisp on the skin, with a brick wall and patterned clothing in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sheet tore down the middle the night Nell left for the mill at Hebden, and Ada spent the winter mending it with thread the colour of weak tea. She stitched the seam tight, then unpicked it twice, because a join that careful looked like something being hidden. Every Sunday a letter came in Nell's loose hand, and every Sunday Ada read it aloud to the hens before she read it to herself.

Nell had a habit of writing only half a thing. The first letter ended with the words There is no better friend than a sister, and then nothing, just a row of dashes marching off the bottom of the page. Ada knew what she was being dared to do. She kept the letter in the tin with the buttons and did not answer it for six weeks, because she did not trust herself to write the rest without sounding like their mother.

When Nell came back at Michaelmas, the wages sewn into her hem and a cough she pretended was nothing, Ada was standing at the gate with the sheet folded over her arm. They did not embrace. Ada unfolded the linen between them, and the darned seam ran straight down the middle, plain and even. Nell touched it with one finger, then took the pencil from behind her ear and wrote, very small, across the corner of the cloth, and you are the best sister there is. Ada read it, laughed once, and told her the spelling was wrong.
