Matching sister quote tattoos on two sides
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two side views show black script lettering on the ribs, with one line on each person that reads as a continuing sentence across the pair. The lettering is a fine serif script in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The photograph is cropped to the torsos, with one person in a green patterned top and the other in a star-print top.

The last ferry leaves Skerrow at four, and by half past three you have already decided Maeve is not coming. She has never once been on time for a boat. You sit on the harbour wall with her red oilskin folded across your knees, watching the gulls work the tide line, and you rehearse the speech you will give her when she finally rolls off the slip with sea spray in her hair and some ridiculous excuse ready.

The excuse is a goat. Brannoch has got into the Mackinnons' loft again and eaten a whole fleece drying on the line, and when she arrives, breathless, she holds up a scrap of orange wool like evidence in a court. You laugh before you can stop yourself, and she laughs too, and for a minute the wind drops and the grey bay seems to hold its breath with you. Neither of you mentions the boat. It leaves without you both, and nobody minds.
Years later the tin on the dresser still holds that orange wool, folded small among the ferry tickets. On the back of the oldest ticket, in her untidy hand, she has written the line you taught her when you were both too young to know what it meant, and underneath it, in your handwriting, the answer she always insisted on having the last word over.
