Bea has a ticket for the Friday train to Sheffield, a room above a bakery and a job in a hospital laundry that pays more than the pit ever did. She says it flat and certain, picking at the cuff of her coat. You tell her the bus to the town is cheaper. She laughs, and the laugh cracks down the middle like ice on the trough in February.

On the last night you walk her to the station with a biro in your fist. On the back of a bus timetable you write the first half of something you have been saying for years, the sort of thing that sounds daft out loud. She reads it under the lamp, folds it twice and tucks it inside her glove. You watch her lips move over the words as if she is checking the spelling.

The guard blows his whistle. Bea leans out of the carriage window with her gloved hand flat against the glass, and you put your own palm to the cold steel outside. Behind you the cooling towers stand dark against the sky. You do not need to say the rest. You already know the other half, and so does she.
