Margo, the ferry from Oban has been cancelled twice now and the harbourmaster has taken to shrugging at me like I've personally ordered the weather. I'm writing this on the back of a chandlery receipt because it is the only paper the shop on the quay will sell me without asking what it's for. The room above the bakery is smaller than the photograph Dad sent, but the window looks straight out at the water, and every morning the light comes across the sheet and makes everything look gilded, even my own hands.

I went to the tattooist on Tuesday, the one with the tin of chalk on the windowsill, and he asked me what I wanted in the smallest possible letters. I said the word heart, the way Gran used to say it when she was tired of pretending she wasn't. He drew it on my wrist in pencil first and we both stared at the slant of it for a long time before he said it needed to lean further, like something walking into wind. I didn't tell him that was exactly how I'd been feeling since the funeral.

I'm not sure yet what I'll do with the other arm. He offered me a tiny outline heart and a line of verse, and I said I'd think. You'll say I'm being fussy. Maybe. Write back and tell me the ferry is running, and tell me the kettle still sticks in the back kitchen, and tell me whether you're keeping the blue cup for me.

If the boat comes in on Friday I'll be on the pier with my sleeves pushed up, waving the receipt at the gulls.
