Matching sisters wrist tattoos, 1 to 3

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Three wrists are pressed together, each carrying a script word reading Sisters over a numeral line reading 1 of 3, 2 of 3 or 3 of 3. The lettering is drawn in fine black linework with a small red heart beside each set of numerals. The soft indoor light and close framing keep the three tattoos clearly in view against the pale tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had come in sideways over the top field the night before, and by first light the lane to Hollin Farm was gone under it. Mother sent the three of us out with the lantern and the shovel, the way she had sent us out every winter since Dad went into the ground. Ada went first because she was the eldest and never let anyone forget it. Bell went second, counting fence posts under her breath. I came last, which I did not mind, because from the back I could see both of them and the grey sky pressing down on the roofs.

We found the ewe at the bottom of the ditch by the sheep gate, half buried, her breath coming in short white puffs. Ada dug. Bell held the lantern high so Ada could see her hands. I got the blanket round the ewe's neck and sang the only song Dad ever sang to animals, which was about a miller's daughter and a goose, badly, until the ewe lifted her head. It took an hour to get her up the bank, our wrists raw under our cuffs, our hands locked together on the rope.

In the kitchen Mother took the old ink pot from the dresser and a pen nobody had used since the funeral. She wrote on the back of the feed ledger in a hand that shook a little. One of three. Two of three. Three of three. Then she laughed, which we had not heard in months, and dabbed a small red heart beside each line with the tip of her thumb, so the ink smudged into our kitchen table.
