To infinity and beyond script on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are pressed together, each showing a single line of cursive script tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist. The left arm reads To infinity with a trailing ellipsis, and the right reads and Beyond, which together complete the phrase. The linework is thin and even with minimal shading, and the photograph is monochrome with soft lighting and a shallow depth of field.

Dear Nell,

The lock keeper at Braunston says the canal goes on for ever if you believe the timetable, and I have been believing it since Tuesday. Dad's old narrowboat, the Marigold, handles like a wardrobe on ice, but I have got her round the bend below the aqueduct without taking the cabin roof off. You would have laughed. I shouted "to infinity" at the gate like a fool, and the boy with the windlass shouted back "and beyond" as though we had planned it.

I have Mum's button tin with me, and the ones with the anchors are still the only thing I cannot sew back on. I keep thinking about the night you split that sentence down the middle with a biro, one half for each of us, so the bit that was yours would stay on your side of the table. You always said I would be the one who went off travelling and you would be the one who stayed to mind the shop. Well, here I am, minding nothing but a leaking gunwale and a cat who will not come out from under the bunk.

Come up to Foxton in June. Bring the good scissors and that jumper you never finished. I will leave the bottom lock open and the kettle on, and if the water runs low we can walk the towpath all the way back to the city together, the slow way, the way Dad used to. It will take about three days, which is roughly infinity if you count in cups of tea.

Love, Jo
