At Saltmarsh House the rooms had their numbers painted over the doors in Roman letters, because the first landlady, Hester Fenn, would not learn the Arabic figures and said the old ones kept the damp out. Room XLIII looked over the sea and room VI looked down the lane, and nobody had taken either since a summer when the bathwater went cold and the boarders all went home. Then two fishermen's daughters came up from the harbour with one trunk between them and asked for the rooms that shared a wall.

Her sister Mary sat up in room VI and knocked twice, then once, then twice again, until the lamp guttered and the window went grey. Before the church bell struck six there came a knock from the far side of the wall, slow and wet, and Mary laid her palm flat on the plaster and felt it in her hand.
