Nell, the tide was out when I left the flat, so I walked the length of the Mersey wall in my good shoes and didn't care who saw. You'll laugh, but I've started practising the thing we used to do off the old landing stage: stand on the edge, look at the black water, and decide. Mum called it dreaming the dive, and you always said I dreamt it so long I missed the tide.

Well, I didn't miss it this time. Mr Okafor at the baths let me into the empty pool after the late shift, and I stood on the board in the dark with the tiles humming and the lights of the Liver Building coming through the high windows. Nobody was there to tell me I'd be sorry. I went in headfirst and came up spluttering with chlorine in my nose, and for a second the whole city seemed to hold its breath.

Here's the thing I need you to hear. The ferry leaves Birkenhead on Thursday and the cabin is booked under your name, because mine was too much of a worry for the landlord. Come with me. Bring the blue case and the photograph of Dad at the baths. I'll wait on the Pier Head until the last bell, and if you're not there by then I'll go alone, and I'll dream about you the whole way across.

Your loving sister, Ada

P.S. Don't tell Mum where I've gone. Tell her I've gone to see the sea.
