Matching heart and infinity tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner forearms are shown side by side, each with a small single-line tattoo of a heart joined to an infinity loop. The linework is thin, even and black, with no shading. The skin is lit softly against a dark background, and the two designs are placed at similar heights to mirror each other.

Ivy Marrack had measured the same stretch of Cornish coast three times before the ink dried on the chart, and Tom Penhale still swore the tide had moved the headland. They worked the cliffs from either end, she with the theodolite on the north face, he with the chain and the tide tables, shouting figures across the cove because the wind took everything else.

On the last Tuesday of September they met at the middle, where the survey lines were meant to close. The numbers didn't agree. Her chain came up four feet long, his four feet short, and for an hour they walked it back and forth over the shingle, arguing the way people do when neither wants the job finished. He drew a loop in the margin of the field book to show her how a line could run out and come back on itself. She drew a heart beside it, then crossed it out, then drew it again.

When the chart went to the Admiralty in October, the closing bearing was a neat figure with no error in it. Tom kept the field book. Ivy kept the chain, coiled in a tin on her windowsill, its last link bent a little where they had pulled against each other. Some evenings she still runs a thumb over that bent link, and the pencil loop in the margin has faded to grey.
