Matching swallow tattoos on wrists
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two near-identical swallows in flight sit on the inside of each wrist, drawn with fine, detailed linework and soft grey shading that gives the feathers and bodies a vintage engraved look. Both birds are rendered in black ink with no colour, and they mirror each other as the hands are held together. The composition is centred on the wrists, with a lace top and dark denim blurred in the background.

By the time the swallows come back to the ambulance bay, you have stopped expecting anyone to tell you what day it is. The night porter's handset crackles with a bed request for Ward 7, and you tip your head back to watch two birds dart under the canopy lights, dropping straight down into the mud cup they rebuilt last spring.

You have been on nights long enough to know which sounds matter. The lift shudders, a trolley wheel squeals along the corridor, and somewhere a monitor settles into its ordinary hum. Ruth from radiology brings you a flask of stewed tea without being asked and says the birds have been there since five, flying in and out like they are late for something. You tell her swallows always are. They come up from Africa over the Channel, thin as wire, and they do not stop to rest unless they have to.
Near four, a porter wheels a man in on a chair, asleep, one hand curled around a plastic bag of his belongings. You hold the door and watch the pair lift off the eaves together, wings drawn back like the lines of an old engraving, then wheel over the car park in step. Nothing is said. Nothing needs to be. You go back inside and sign the book, writing the time as 04:12 and, in the margin where nobody checks, a small neat swallow.
