Three swallows on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three small solid black swallows are arranged in a loose diagonal across the inner wrist, each shown in a simple silhouette with pointed wings and forked tails. The birds appear in flat black ink with little visible shading, set against smooth pale skin. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus and a shallow depth of field that keeps the wrist in the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to the big top the same week the bank letter arrived, which Mr Halloway said was a sign and I said was just birds. Three of them, every May, nesting in the rigging where the canvas met the king pole, their mud cups glued to the steel like thumbprints on a window.

By August the show was down to eleven people, two elephants that had been sold on paper twice, and a tent with more patches than sky. We played the Cleethorpes fairground and the rain came in sideways through the seams. Halloway never raised his voice. He stood at the edge of the ring with his hat in his hands, counting the crowd under his breath the way a man counts a bad hand of cards.

My job was to catch. Dorrie flew, I caught, and we had done it for nineteen years without once missing. On the last night at Skegness the rigging creaked, and the birds rose out of the nests in a flock like a handful of thrown ash. They circled the empty seats twice, then dropped through the gap in the flap into the dusk. Dorrie watched them go and said, 'They know the route better than we do.'

We struck the tent the next morning. I folded the canvas myself and found one nest still stuck to the top steel, cold and empty. I put it in my coat pocket. Somewhere south of Peterborough, with the lorries rattling in convoy, I took it out and set it on the dashboard. It weighed nothing at all, which is the trouble with leaving things that have only ever held air.
