The pod found us off the Hebrides on the third morning out of Oban, when the swell was long and grey and nobody on the Maren Dawn had slept properly since the fog. Old Tomasz swore they were following the boat, three of them, breaching in a loose ring around the bow as if the hull were a bollard they had been told to circle. I wanted to log them and go back to the bunk. He wanted to name them. He named them after his three daughters, which was a mistake, because by the afternoon the eldest had gone under the keel and would not come up on the port side.

We lost the light before we lost the whales. Rain came in sideways and the radio gave us nothing but static and a woman reading shipping forecasts for a sea that had already moved on. Tomasz stood at the rail with a torch he never switched on, saying the orcas knew the channel better than the chart did. I did not believe him, but I watched the black fins keep their distance and close it again, always in the same slow turn, always leading us away from the Skerries and the shelf where the Dawn had nearly gone down the year before.

At dawn the fog lifted in one clean sheet and there was land, close and green, with a harbour light blinking at us like it had been waiting all night. The whales were gone. Tomasz said that was how you knew they had done their job. I still have the chart, folded soft at the corner, with three small pencil rings drawn around the place where we would have hit the rocks.
