Matching symbol tattoos on two feet
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet show matching black ink tattoos of a large, bold calligraphic symbol that wraps across the top of each foot towards the ankle. Small, thin script runs alongside the symbol on the left foot, and the bold strokes are solid black with clean edges. The feet rest on a grey speckled floor, with red nail polish and a sandal strap visible in the frame.

Old Tamsin the ink-grinder lived where the tarmac gave up and became a sand track, and she kept one bamboo brush whose hair had been cut from a mare that drowned in the spring floods. Every season travellers came up the road asking her to paint their names over their doorways, so the wind would know whose house was whose. She charged in salt and never in coin.

One year two cousins arrived from the wells with split boots and a single letter folded in oilcloth. It was the mark of their grandmother's village, a long curling stroke that meant return, with a thin line of small words beside it that no one living could read anymore. They wanted it written twice, once for each of them, so that neither would forget the road home. Tamsin ground the ink with cistern water, which tasted of iron, and told them the strokes had to be made in one breath or they would break.
She wrote the great stroke first, sweeping from the crest of the foot down toward the heel, and the cousins watched without speaking. Beside it she set the small script, so fine that the younger one squinted and laughed. When the ink dried the marks were black and clean at the edges, and the two of them could walk the same road carrying the same word.
They went back down the track at dusk. By morning the wind had smoothed their footprints from the sand, but the oilcloth was still folded on Tamsin's step, and she left it there for the next traveller who came asking for the way home.
