Matching anchor tattoos on two feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two small anchor tattoos sit on the tops of bare feet, one on the left foot and one on the right foot in a brown sandal. The anchors are drawn with bold outlines and grey shading, with a rope-like detail along the shank. The photograph is taken from above on a dark asphalt surface, and the toenails on the sandalled foot are painted teal.

Mairi found the anchor at low water, half buried in the wrack below the Skerry where the tide had left it. Its shank was still wound with the grey rope that had held the Kittiwake to the quay before the gale took her. She sat beside it for a long time, waiting for the sea to ask for it back, and when the sea did not, she went up the shingle to fetch her cousin Ewan, who had the strongest back on the island and no sense at all.

Ewan argued that anything found on the shore belonged to whoever could carry it to the kirk before the bell rang for evening prayer. Mairi said that was a foolish rule made by men who wanted to see a show. They bent together, one at the crown and one at the fluke, and dragged it up the path between the peat stacks. Halfway, the rope split and they both fell into the heather, laughing so hard the ewes came over the wall to look at them.
The bell rang while they were still on the slope. Old Brannoch the smith came out with his hammer and studied the anchor for a long while. He said an anchor that had held one boat could not be given to one child, for it would only pull her out to sea after it. So he heated the iron in his forge and beat it into two, each the length of a hand, and he bound each one with a strand of the same rope. Mairi took one, Ewan took the other, and neither of them had to carry anything alone again.
