Treble clef heart and stars on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A treble clef forms the outline of a heart, with small five-point stars and curling wisps trailing up beside it on the top of a bare foot. The linework is bold and solid black, with soft grey shading behind the swirls that gives them depth. The foot is photographed against a textured beige surface, with the toes painted dark red in the foreground.

The wind had sat in the wrong quarter for nine days, and the boats were still out past Gannet Rock when Mair Tolland came down the harbour steps with her father's fiddle under one arm. The old man lay upstairs with his hands curled like dead leaves, unable to hold a bow, and the whole town had stopped staring at the water because staring did nothing.

She knew the tune. Her father had written it the year she was born, a slow thing that climbed, turned on itself, and came back to the same low note. He always said a fisherman could find his way home by it if he listened hard enough. She set the fiddle under her chin, wet her lips, and played.
The first phrase went out over the water and stayed there. The second curled up into the dusk, and where each note hung in the air a small star pricked out, five points of pale light, until the sky above the wall was crowded with them. The notes bent into a heart with a long tail, the way the old clef was drawn in the parish book, and the boats began to turn toward it one by one.
Her bow snapped on the last bar. She hummed the final note instead, low in her throat, and the lanterns on the hulls swung round toward the wall. Eleven boats came through the gap, then twelve, and the thirteenth was Tam Greer's, with her father's name painted on the bow. Upstairs the window stood open, and Mair could see his shape in it, one hand moving slowly on the sill, keeping time.
