Winged fairy on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a winged fairy-like figure with antennae sits on the top of a foot. The linework is bold and mostly outline, with the wings drawn as open shapes and a single long line trailing from them across the skin. The ink is solid black on pale skin, shown against a dark background.

Every night off the Farne bank, the lamp on the wheelhouse drew something small out of the dark. Skipper Tully swore it was a moth, though the moths I knew from my nan's back garden never had legs like a wren's and never stood on the rail to watch the winch. This one had a face like a thumbprint in wax and two antennae that bent whenever the boat rolled, as if it were listening to the sea for news.

We hauled pots for eleven days with that thing riding the rail. The crew called it Pennant, after the cord on the buoys, because it always came back to the same spot by the stern and trailed behind it a single black thread that snagged on nothing. Old Dai the cook said it was a fairy that had lost its way from the Scottish islands. Dai said a lot of things once the rum was out.
On the twelfth night the net came up with a child's shoe in it, rubber-soled and too small for any of us. Nobody spoke. Pennant lifted off the rail, circled the lamp twice and went straight out over the black water, the thread paying out behind it like line running off a reel. Tully took the wheel and turned us for home without being told.
We came in on the morning tide. The thread was still visible when the sun caught it, stretched from the harbour wall to somewhere out past the breakwater, and I have never once since then cast a line without looking to see where it runs.
