The range in the Marigold Rose has been cold since the gale, and you are the only one awake to light it. Dessa sleeps in the bunk above the flour sacks, one hand hanging over the edge the way it always did, and you stand at the stove with a box of lucifers and a tin cup of stewed tea, counting the boots that pass the porthole in the dark.

Last spring in Valparaíso the two of you sat on an upturned crate behind the chandler's with a jar of lampblack and a sail needle borrowed from the bosun. She drew the first mark on you, a hooked stroke crossing a short bar, then you drew the same on her, and the ink went under the skin as if it had always been there. Her grandmother had taught her the characters for hold and return. Whoever reached the galley first would keep the fire going for the other, and neither of you thought much about it, because you were both twenty and the sea was a rumour.

Off the Horn the foremast went and Dessa went with it, a rope in her hands and a shout that the wind took before it reached you. The mate called it at the second bell. You kept the range lit for eleven days, feeding it splints of broken hatch boards, boiling water for men who did not ask for it, and every night you set a second pot on the hob out of habit.

The Marigold Rose limped into Punta Arenas with her sails in rags. You have not gone ashore. Tonight the cook's boy asks who the second pot is for, and you tell him the bread needs somewhere to rise, which is not the whole truth, though it is true enough to be going on with.
