Small black abstract symbol on the ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an abstract, swirling symbol with a few curved strokes sits on the side of the ankle, just below the ankle bone. The lines are solid and even with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the pale skin. The bare foot rests on a light blue bedsheet with navy and cream dots, and the photo is taken at a close angle.

The wind came off the allotments every October as if it had a grudge against the pear tree, and my grandmother Vera would stand at the back door with her arms folded and tell it to mind its manners. I was nine the year she gave me the job of tying the loose gate shut before the frost. I did it with binder twine and a bad knot, and she untied it and showed me the proper one, the one that slides and holds at once.

Nobody else on Hatherley Lane believed in the swirl that lived in the privet behind the shed. We called it the Eddy because Dad said it was only a draught tangled in the hedge. But every evening the dust on the path lifted in the same curl, three turns and a tail, and the blackbirds went quiet until it passed. Vera said it was someone's lost breath, a gardener who had died mid-prune and never got to finish the row.
The autumn Dad sold the plot to the council, I went down with a trowel and dug where the curl always started. Under the roots I found a tobacco tin with a pressed fern inside and a note in pencil: keep turning, keep turning. I put the tin in my coat and walked backwards down the lane, the way Vera taught me to leave a garden I had not finished.
The next morning the gate hung open, and the air moved over the bare beds in one smooth loop and went on up the hill. I tied the twine to the hook anyway, the sliding knot, and left it loose enough for something to pass through.
