Small crown tattoos on two arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small crown tattoos in black ink sit on two arms that are pressed close together. The upper crown has a flat base, pointed peaks and small dots, drawn with thin, even linework. The lower crown is larger and partly out of focus, with a similar outline and dot detail, and the photo is set against a pale denim sleeve and grey fabric.

The lock at Thornwick takes forty minutes to fill, and Ada never stays still for any of them. She sits on the cabin roof with her knees drawn up, counting the paddles the keeper turns, while you hold the tiller steady against the current. The Marigold has carried coal, then bricks, then nothing at all for two winters, and her hull still smells of tar and the peppermints your grandmother kept in her coat pockets.

The crowns were Ada's idea. Last August, moored below the mill, she heated a darning needle over the stove, dipped it in the Indian ink your father used for signwriting, and pricked a small crown into the skin of your upper arm while you bit down on a folded tea towel. It took most of the night. Her own crown came out lopsided, one peak taller than the rest, and she swore it belonged to a queen who had lost a fight with a gatepost.
By October her crown had blurred into a grey smudge while yours stayed sharp. Ada said that was because you were the one who sat still. You did not argue. You had stopped pretending the barge was only lent to you and started to know the river the way she did, by the note the weir made after rain and the way the mud shifted under the hull before the bank gave way.
The lock gates groaned open at dawn. Ada climbed down onto the towpath and held out her hand, and for once you saw both crowns in the grey light, your arms pressed together, one fresh and one fading, while the Marigold lifted on the water and nosed out towards the next reach.
