Two people's wrists and forearms are shown as they hold hands, each with a matching infinity symbol in thin black linework. The ribbon had been in the tin since before the carousel was painted, a length of blue silk joined end to end so neatly that nobody could find the join. Ada Marsh found it on the last night of the Michaelmas fair, when the generator was already coughing and the lights along the waltzer were going out one by one.

Her father had always said the ribbon was for lovers who did not want to end. You took the loop to the big wheel, the old man said, and one of you held it while the other stepped through, and then you were both bound to the same turning. Ada thought this was the sort of thing a showman said to sell tea. Still, when Tomas from the chair-o-planes came round the back of the generator with grease on his hands and asked what she was holding, she did not put it away.

They tried it at the wheel. He threaded the silk through his left hand and she threaded hers through the same loop, and the ribbon drew tight into a figure lying on its side, a doubled eight with nothing at the crossing but their two wrists. Neither of them knew afterwards which of them had pulled it closed. The wheel turned, the lights came back on for one minute, and the silk stayed warm.

Forty years later, a woman who had never been to a fair sold the caravan with its tin still under the bench. The buyer found the ribbon too and tied it round a parking metre out of kindness. Nobody cut it. The loop, as far as anyone can tell, is still going round.
