Lace garter bands with bows on both legs
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows two legs with matching black tattoos of lace bands, dotted lines and small bows, arranged as garter-style rings. The linework is fine and even, with the lace edges and dots drawn in solid black ink against the skin. The image is in warm, muted tones with the dark fabric and a hand at the lower edge framing the design.

The Bentinck Street mill smelled of machine oil and damp wool, and by the third week of March Ada Pyne had learned to hear a bobbin going wrong before she saw it. Mr Lowther wanted narrow edging for the Leicester trade, three rows of dotted mesh with a scalloped border, the sort of thing that went round a garter and was seen by nobody but the wearer. Ada thought it a poor use of good Nottingham thread and said so once, and was moved to the finishing room for her trouble.

The finishing room was where the pattern cards lived, stiff sheets pricked with holes for the Jacquard. Ada spent her dinner hours with a pencil, copying a bow from a tin lid her brother had brought back from Ypres. It was a slight thing, two loops and a tail, and she could never get the tail to sit. Every version she punched came out looking like a moth caught against a window. On the fourth evening she turned the card over and tried the bow backwards, and the tail lay flat.
Lowther took the sample without looking at it and sent three hundred yards down to the Leicester order. Ada never saw it sold. Months later a girl from the packing bench said a music-hall dancer in Brighton had bought a pair of garters and posted the mill a card with a bow inked on it, asking who had designed the edge. Nobody answered, and Ada kept the card in her pattern tin with the others.
Some nights, when the mill has gone quiet, she still tries the bow the wrong way round, just to see whether the tail will lie flat, and it always does.
