Dear Mel,

The lift in Hollins House is broken again, so I climbed all nineteen floors with the shopping and came out at the top sweating like a kettle. Your mum sends her love and says you're to eat something green. I told her you'd rather eat the wallpaper in that Aberdeen flat of yours, which she didn't find funny.

Do you remember the walkway? Every summer we stood at opposite ends of it, you by the bins and me by the stairwell, and one of us would shout 'to infinity' and the other had to shout back 'and beyond' before the bus went past, or you lost. You never lost. I always let you win by being too slow, and you always knew.

Yesterday I stood at the bins on my own and shouted it anyway. A boy on the ninth floor leaned out and asked who I was calling, and I said nobody, and then, because it was daft, I said my friend, she's up north counting seagulls. He said that sounded like a long way. I said it was, and that was rather the point.

Here's the thing I've been trying to tell you on the phone and keep cutting off. The council are knocking it down in spring. They'll put us in a house with a garden, with a number on the door that isn't a floor. I'm taking the bins with me, if they let me. So when you come back for the wedding, don't go looking for the stairwell. Stand wherever you like and shout. I'll hear you from the car park.

Love always, Jo
