Two bare lower backs show black script lettering: To infinity on the left hip and and beyond on the right side, both in fine cursive style.

Script phrases on two sets of hips

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are shown from behind, each with a black script phrase tattooed on the skin. The left reads To infinity over the hip, and the right reads and beyond on the side of the body, with black underwear visible at the left. The linework is clean and the ink is solid black on warm skin, with a soft, plain background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it smokes when the wind comes round the breakwater. Now. You'll have heard about the Pryce sisters, who ran the ropewalk at the bottom of Quay Street before the war took the men and left the women to do the splicing. Everybody knows they quarrelled. Fewer people know why.

Ivy was the elder and could read the tide tables by the smell of the sea. Marian was the one who wrote letters, long ones, and gave them to the mail boatmen to carry out as far as the Skerry and drop in a tin for passing ships. The last letter Marian sent was only a few words long, and she sent it on a Tuesday in bad weather, while Ivy was already rowing out to see if the Helen Mary had made harbour.

The Helen Mary never came back up the channel. Ivy waited on the wall for three nights. On the fourth morning a drowned boy from the herring fleet washed in with a tin buttoned inside his coat, and in it was a scrap of paper with the start of a sentence in Marian's looping hand: To infinity. Nothing after it. Ivy understood it was the beginning of a promise, not the end of one.

So she took her own tin out past the Skerry every tide for thirty years, and on every scrap she sent she wrote the second half, and and beyond, and kept a copy pinned above the ropewalk stove. People laugh about it now, but the tin is still on the office sill. Open it and you'll find those words folded small, the ink gone brown, waiting for a sister to come back and finish the sentence.
