Matching yin yang tattoos on two hips

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows two small yin yang tattoos, one on each person's lower side or hip area, just above the waistband of underwear. A hand rests on the upper left of the frame, and no faces are visible. Each tattoo has solid black and grey shading with a light and dark dot, and the soft, even lighting keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

The man from Marrow Lane came through on Tuesday with his inks in a biscuit tin. He pricked the two of us in the back room of the inn, one either side of the hearth, while the castle wall outside dropped another stone into the ditch. You said it would hold us to each other. I said nothing held anybody, and then I let him finish mine, which I think you counted as a kind of agreement.

I went up to the ruined gatehouse this morning to look at the sea through the arrow slit. The tide was going out round the rocks in two long curves, one dark, one pale, meeting at a point and then pulling apart again. I stood there longer than I meant to. When the wind came off the water I put my hand flat against the stone where the mortar had gone, the way you used to press your palm to the bell rope to stop it ringing.

Come home when the boats are in. I will keep the kettle on and the good cups out, and if you are still sulking I will sit on the far side of the table where the light is worst and let you have the window.
