Matching tiny caret tattoos on two ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, showing their bare sides and ribs, with one hand visible on the left. Each side carries a very small, single-stroke caret or chevron tattoo drawn in thin black linework. The image is monochrome, with soft shading across the skin and the marks placed near the centre of each rib cage.

Dear Ruth,

The ledger came back from the Morning Thrush at Gravesend with a caret in it, and I have not been able to stop looking at it. Mr Abernathy's hand, small and neat, had put it between two lines of the cargo book, where the tally of tea chests went from forty-two to forty-four. Nothing in the margin said what was missing. He had only drawn the little upward stroke, the mark we were taught at school to show that something belonged there and had been left out.
I asked the second mate about it over supper. He laughed and said the old purser used to make them for the men who went over the side in the Bay, so the sums would always show a gap where they had been. Two of the carpenters had gone that way on the outward leg. When we raised the Cape there were two new carets in the book, one set beside the other, as though the pair of them had been counted in together and left their places in the columns.
I have been thinking about that since, Ruth, and I do not think it is a sad thing. A gap in a ledger is only honest. Mr Abernathy never once wrote a figure he had not counted. When I come home I shall bring the book to you and show you where the marks are, and you can tell me what we ought to do with a sum that will never come out even.
Yours in haste, Edith
