The lamp road ran across the salt flats of Varenmoor, the kingdom mapmakers stopped bothering to colour in. My cousin Ysolde and I left Harrow Quay at dusk with two tin lanterns swinging from our fingers, each lid marked with a small heart drawn in lamp-black. Her mother had made the lanterns. We had only been asked to carry them to the watch tower at Stillwater, where the keeper's daughter was to be married by the light of two families' flames.

The marsh took our boots before the moon came up. Ysolde talked the whole way about the keeper's son, who she said had hands like a fishing net, all knots and kindness. I talked about nothing, because I had decided long ago that the heart on my lantern was the only honest thing I owned. We crossed the causeway with black water lapping at the stones on either side, and the tower stayed dark, which frightened us both more than we admitted.
At the tower door we found the keeper's wife sitting on the step with a candle stub and a ledger. "Nobody has lit that beacon for thirty years," she said, "because nobody came asking for light. You came asking." She took our lanterns, tipped the soot from each lid into her palm, and pressed her thumb to the grey shapes, leaving two hearts on her skin, small and exactly the same size.
We lit the tower that night, and Ysolde's flame went up first. She married the keeper's son a month later, and I stood at her shoulder while the marsh stayed quiet. The two hearts are still on the lanterns, one on each lid, both pointing the same way towards the sea.
