Realistic eye with flies

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large, detailed human eye with long lashes fills most of the frame, with its iris, pupil and bright highlight rendered in fine detail. Three small flies sit around the eye, one near the upper lashes and two below. The piece is shaded entirely in black and grey, with soft gradients across the skin and sharp dark strokes around the lashes.

The flies had got into the cabinet again by the time Mrs Okonedo rang the bell at ten past midnight, bumping against the glass where the finished eyes sat on their velvet rows. Hettie Crane wiped her hands on her apron and blamed the heat. Leeds had been baking for a week, and the back streets off Kirkgate smelt of bins and river.

Mrs Okonedo unwrapped a parcel of brown paper on the counter. Inside was a glass eye, cracked along the lower rim, its iris painted in soft grey strokes that Hettie recognised before she had properly looked. Her father's hand. He had painted the whites of a thousand eyes in this room, and he had never once signed one. "It's been in my husband's drawer since the funeral," the woman said. "I want the lid to close properly. Can you make it match the photograph?"

Hettie set the eye under the lamp and turned it slowly. The highlight was the hard part, the little white pearl of window light that made a stranger look alive. Her father had always said the trick was leaving one fly in the picture somewhere, a speck at the edge where no one would think to look, so the customer knew the eye had seen something real. She found a clean brush and, for the first time in years, painted one in, no bigger than a grain of pepper, resting on the outer lash line.

When Mrs Okonedo left at two, the eye was back in its box and her handbag was lighter by a great deal of money. Hettie stayed on the stool and watched the cabinet. The flies had gone from the glass. In the morning, when she came down to open the shutters, there was nothing buzzing in the window at all, only the small painted fly in the corner of the iris, still keeping its watch.
