Medical alert wrist tattoo for Meniere's disease
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo sits on the inner wrist and reads Meniere's Disease above and Vertigo below, set in black lettering with clean, solid edges. Between the two words is a red snake-and-staff symbol with the words MEDIC ALERT running vertically on either side. Black text and red linework make up the composition, which is shown in a close, straight-on photograph.

Agnes Corrie had the galley to herself at half five, which was the only hour the Hesper stopped pretending she was steady. The porridge pot slid a hand's width across the range and back again. She wedged a folded tea towel under its foot and kept stirring, because the passengers would want their breakfast whatever the Minch thought of it.

Dr Malcolm Reay came down the companionway with his bag in one hand and a damp sheet of card in the other. He had been up all night with a stoker who had caught his arm in a winch, and his cuffs were stiff with someone else's blood. He laid the card on the scrubbed table and pressed it flat with his palm. Red ink, a little smudged: a snake coiled round a short staff, with MEDIC and ALERT printed in capitals down either side, the way the chandlers stencilled the lamp oil tins.
"The Stornoway girl is travelling with her aunt," he said. "If she goes faint on the gangway, nobody aboard will know what to do for her. Copy it onto something she can show them."
"Her aunt can read," Agnes said.
"Her aunt is seasick and has been since Ullapool." He pushed the pen across to her. "Go on. You have the steadier hand."
She took the pen and drew the staff on the back of her own left hand, slowly, the way her mother had once drawn the sign of the cross on a loaf before it went in the oven. The snake came out lopsided. She tried again. By the time the Hesper shuddered against the Stornoway piers she had the thing right, and she held her hand up under the dockside lamp for the doctor to see, the red line glowing like a small lantern in the dark.
