Three keyboard keys on an ankle

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three keyboard keys sit side by side in a horizontal row across the lower leg, each with a raised, bevelled edge. The keys are shaded in black and grey with soft highlights, and the small legends Ctrl, Alt and G are visible on the keycaps. The photo shows the tattoo above a grey trainer on tiled flooring.

Nobody in the Hollin Archive could say when the iron door at the foot of the east stair was last opened, only that its brass plate carried three keys stamped into the metal, and that they had to be held down together or the bolt simply refused. My uncle Piet kept the lock's keyboard, a grey slab of oak with the letters worn off by four centuries of thumbs. When I was twelve he taught me the order: hold the first key, hold the second, then tap the G and count to three.

I thought it was a joke the old clerks played on new boys until the winter Piet's hands shook too badly to hold anything. The Queen's steward wanted the tithe ledgers by morning, and I was the only one left who had watched the ritual. I pressed Ctrl with my left palm, Alt with the heel of my right, and leaned my elbow down on the G. The bolt groaned like a cow in a flood and the door swung open onto dust and candle smoke.

Inside, beside the ledgers, I found a tin box of letters written in Piet's mother's hand. Every one began with the same line: the lock was never meant to keep thieves out. It was meant to need two people and a third to make the final press, so that no single clerk could ever open the archive alone and tell a lie about what was inside. I carried the ledgers up the stair and gave them to the steward, and I did not mention the box to anyone, though I did leave the door unbolted for the rest of the week.
