Three hearts with infinity symbol on forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on a forearm showing three solid black hearts in a row, with a white infinity symbol woven through the centre and between the outer hearts. The hearts are filled with solid black ink and the infinity loop is left as untouched skin, creating a strong contrast. The design sits centred in the frame against a blue fabric edge on the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's daughter in Gresley Wharf had three hearts to choose from when she was nine, and she chose the one her mother had drawn on the back of a fish receipt. Her mother kept the receipt in the tin with the bus passes. Every night after the lamps went on along the canal, the girl sat on the lock gate and counted the barges that passed, and her mother said a barge that passed twice in one night was carrying someone home.

When the river froze that winter, two men came up from the docks with a lantern and a bottle, looking for a boat that wasn't there. They asked the girl for the way to the chandler's, and she gave it to them the long way, round by the bridge, because the short way ran past the drowned crane and nobody liked to go there after dark. One of the men had a loop of silver wire in his coat pocket. He turned it over and over while he talked, and the girl watched it catch the light and never quite finish a circle.

They came back the next night without the bottle. The older one knelt on the towpath and drew three shapes in the frost with a stick: two hearts side by side, and a third between them, with a figure of eight running through all of them so that you could not tell where one ended. He said that was how the wire went when it was bent right. The girl said her mother would want to know who was paying for the ink, and he laughed and said it was the river's ink, and it never ran out.

By spring the lock keeper had seen the barge go through twice in one night more than once. The girl still counts them from the gate, and when the lamps come on she touches the three hearts on her wrist, the middle one pressed a little deeper than the others, as if someone had leaned on it to hold the line.
