Medusa with snakes in black and grey
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A woman's face with closed eyes sits at the centre, surrounded by a dense crown of snakes with open mouths and fangs. Smooth, sculpted shading builds the face and scales, while stippled and ridged textures fill the swirling water and decorative swirls at the top and bottom. The image is entirely black and grey on a near-black background, with the design filling a tall, vertical composition.

You learn the rules of the Marine Ballroom in your first week. The lights stay low on Thursdays. Nobody meets the eyes of Mrs Vosper at the cloakroom hatch, and nobody asks why she wears her hair under a black silk net even in July. The band from Margate plays Smoke Gets in Your Eyes for the third time while the tide knocks against the pilings beneath the boards, and you count the couples as they turn, the way you were taught to count change.

One Thursday in September a stranger came in off the rain with a sailor's cap crushed in one fist. She asked you for a waltz, and you gave her your arm because the rule was only ever meant for the cloakroom. Her eyes stayed shut the whole length of the floor. She held your hand the way a deckhand holds a rope in a gale, firm and without looking, and she said that the stones on the harbour wall had all been men who looked too long. You laughed. She didn't.
Halfway through the second chorus the water came up through the boards, cold and black and alive. It climbed the rail and wound round the pillars, and where it touched the men at the bar their faces went grey and smooth as shingle. Something moved against your collar, dry and patient. You didn't look. You didn't have to.
When the band packed up at midnight the girl had gone and the floor was dry as bone. Mrs Vosper slid a black silk net across the counter without a word, and in the cloakroom mirror your hair had begun to lift, slow and deliberate, like something deciding which way to turn.
