Lace-winged fairy silhouette
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A fairy in profile, drawn as a solid black silhouette with lace-like filigree patterns across her wings, dress and hair. The wings sweep out in curling, spiked shapes, and the lower dress and feet are detailed with fine web-like lines. The image is entirely black on white, with no shading or colour, and the figure fills the frame.

The lace merchants of Vell had a rule that no thread left the city unless a fairy had spun it, so every spring the guild sent me up the Caddow Pass with a cart of empty spools. I was fourteen and quick with my fingers, which is why they chose me, and why I was the one who found Marra Thistlewick asleep in the frost on the third day, her wings stiff as pressed leaves.

Mother Hask had told us she had been weaving on the far side of the pass for longer than the guild had existed, though nobody had ever seen her work. Her wings were dark as a chimney's mouth and cut through with holes, like a spider's net after rain. When I shook her shoulder, a single silver filament ran from her hand to the hem of her gown, and it was still warm.
"You're late," she said, without opening her eyes. "The thread wants finishing before the thaw."
So I finished it. I sat on the cold stone with her needle while she directed me, one loop at a time, and the pattern climbed the back of my wrist until it looked like frost rising up a windowpane. By dusk the silk had gone dark and curling at its edges, spiked like the points of a crown.
When I came down to Vell, the guild took the spool and paid me in brass. Nobody asked where the lace had come from. On the first snow of that winter I unpicked one curl from the scrap I had kept and held it to the lamp. It threw a net of shadow across the table, fine as anything Marra ever made, and I understood that the guild had never bought lace at all.
