Mermaid curled within a scaled tail

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A mermaid with long, flowing hair is shown in profile, tilted upwards and curled inside a large circle formed by her scaled tail. Smooth shading and detailed scales give the figure and tail a realistic quality, while wispy smoke or water swirls and small bubbles fill the background. The drawing is rendered entirely in black and grey on a white background, with the composition sitting centrally.

Pass that ladle over, boy, and mind the pot, because this is the part where the sea comes up through the scuttle asking for its supper. Forty years I cooked on the Marigold Vane, out of Hull and then Bristol, and the thing I never told the owners is that a cook hears more than the captain does. Night watch, galley fire banked low, the bilge pumps knocking like a drunk at a door, and under all that a voice coming up through the iron. Not singing exactly. More like someone humming a tune they had forgotten the end of.

Old Tobias Renn had the port watch then, and he swore the woman in the water was the spit of his dead sister, which was nonsense, but he went to the rail every night with a tin of ship's biscuit. I told him leave her be, Toby, they don't come up for biscuit. He said they come up for whoever is still listening. So I listened. That was my mistake.

One night off the Bay of Biscay the sea went flat as a plate. I stood at the rail with my hands full of scraps and there she was, not twenty yards off, lying on the black water with her tail coiled in a great ring, scales catching what little moon there was, her hair lifting like smoke off a doused wick. She didn't ask for anything. She only let the bubbles rise from her lips one by one, and I counted them, the way you count between thunder and lightning, and when I reached nine she was gone, the ring of her tail sinking slow as a dropped coin.

Toby never went to the rail again. Me, I still count, and I still save the scraps. Hand me that ladle now and bring the lamp closer, because I'm not having you say I told it wrong.
