Tribal dragon design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black tribal-style dragon rears upward with spiked wings, clawed forelimbs and a long coiling tail. The linework is bold, with flowing negative-space stripes and scale-like shapes cut into the black fills. The image is monochrome on a plain white background, with the design set alone and no body or skin visible.

The net came up heavy, and Tomas knew from the weight of it that it wasn't fish. He braced his boots on the wet planks while the winch whined and the trawler rolled under him like a tired animal. Through the mesh, something black broke the surface, all spiked wings and curling tail, dripping weed.

It was iron, or had been once. A dragon's head reared off a broken mooring post, its clawed forelimbs raised as if it meant to fly straight out of the sea. Skipper Hale leaned over the rail, spat, and told him to cut it loose before it sank them. Tomas had his knife out already, but he hesitated, because the wings were pitted with rust and yet the spines along them still looked sharp enough to draw blood.
He sawed through the last strand of rope. The iron slid over the gunwale and went down with a sound like a door closing, but the tail held his wrist for a moment, cold as a shackle, before letting go. When he looked at his palm there was a black curl printed across it, fine as ink, and no amount of scrubbing with carbolic would shift it.
Three days later the fleet was tied up in Skerrow harbour and the tide was out. Tomas walked the breakwater at dusk and found, scratched into the green weed of the old stones, a long coil ending in a rearing head. He pressed his hand against it. The mark fitted his palm exactly, and he stood there until the water came back in.
