The fawn had been left in the bramble behind the mill, and Edie Harrow knew before she reached it that the mother was not coming back. She knelt in the wet leaves with the lantern on the ground between them. The little thing did not run. It stood on legs too long for its body and looked at her as though she were the one who had lost something.

Her grandfather had kept the hedge-gate at the top of Holloway Wood for forty years, and he had a rule for strays: take them to the edge, never past it. Past the edge, the beeches kept accounts. Edie carried the fawn up the lane with its heart knocking against her coat, past the pump and the sleeping hens, while the church clock struck eleven somewhere behind her.

At the gate she set it down. It did not go. It nudged her palm with a cold nose, then walked three careful steps into the trees, stopped, and glanced back over its shoulder the way the old gatekeeper's dog used to when it wanted following. Edie thought of her grandfather's rule and of the rule beneath it, which he had never said aloud: you do not decide for what has no word for you.

She opened the gate and left it standing. In the morning the mill-boy swore he saw a doe on the ridge, grey as ash, with one ear torn, and beside her a slim shadow that held still for as long as it took him to count to ten. Edie hung the lantern back on its hook and, when she went out again at dusk, found the gate still open on the latch.
