A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the lantern room at ten past nine with the wick trimmed and the paraffin can still warm from your hand, and the lamp is dark. The lens stands in its brass cage like a jar of cold water, and the old keeper, Mr Teague, is not at his table. You find him on the iron floor between the lens and the rail, curled up tight with his knees under his chin and his oilskin dragged over his shoulders, as small as a boy asleep in his father's coat.

"Don't put the kettle on," he says without opening his eyes. "It's the ring. If I stand up, the ring goes out." You have heard the mainland men tell it, that Teague kept the light through a winter when the bell rang for nine nights without a boat coming in, and that he has never once stood upright in this room since. You kneel beside him on the grating while the wind leans on the glass.

You light the wick anyway, quietly, and the mantle catches with a soft pop. The beam swings out over the Minch, a single turning circle laid on the black water, and far below a trawler's lamp answers it. Teague's breath slows against the iron. You tell him the boat is home, and he nods once, as though that was the only thing he had been keeping himself curled around.

You lie down too, your back to his, the cold rising through your coat, and you watch the light go round and round over the two of you until the sky greys at the edge of the sea.
