Mermaid silhouette on the top of a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A mermaid sits on a rock, shown mostly as a dark silhouette with her head turned upwards and her tail curving out to the right. Red and green tones pick out the edges of her hair and tail, and a soft red-brown shadow sits beneath the rock. The design is centred on the top of the foot and the photograph is taken straight on under indoor light.

Nell Harrigan had finished the late mop on the ferry pier at Seacombe when she saw the shape on the breakwater, black against the orange sodium lamps, its head tipped back as though it were listening for a ship. She had walked that wall for eleven winters and never once seen anything on it but gulls and a drowned traffic cone.

She went down the slimed steps in her rubber boots. The figure was a woman, or the outline of one, sitting on a heap of wet black rock with her knees drawn up and a long tail spilling over the edge into the water. Where the lamplight caught her hair it went red at the rim, and her tail had a green gleam like bottle glass. Nell said, "You'll take cold sitting there," and the figure did not answer. It only kept looking up at the wheeling dark.
The tide came in around the rocks while she stood there, slow and brown, and the shadow beneath the stone seemed to deepen as the water reached it. Nell thought of her brother, who had gone to sea on a container ship out of Gladstone Dock and sent one postcard in nine years. She told the figure this, which was foolish, and then she sat down beside it on the cold stone with her coat pulled over her knees.
When the night bus hissed at the top of the slipway, she stood and found her own shadow thrown long across the wall. Beside it, for one moment, lay a second shape with a tail, leaning towards the water. Then the lamp flickered, the rock was only rock, and the sea went on saying what it always said.
