The last up train had gone, and the tide was already over the bottom step of Carrick Sands Halt when you heard the bell at the ticket hatch, the little brass one nobody had rung since your father kept the lamps. You slid the shutter back. Where the car park used to be, the water stood in a long glassy curl, and on its crest sat a woman with hair down past her waist, one arm folded across her middle, a silver chain at her wrist catching the lamplight.

"One single," she said, "to Lowdown Cross." You looked at the departure board, which had no such station. Then you looked at the ledger, which did. Your father's handwriting, faded to brown: Lowdown Cross, sea level, fare paid in salt. You told her the fare was a pound, and she laughed, a sound like shingle dragged back down a beach, and held out her wrist. The bracelet was a chain of small brass tickets, each one punched.
You counted them with your thumb. Eleven punched, one blank. "Who held the ninth?" you asked. "The signalman who left the points set wrong at Cray," she said. "He came back in the spring to settle his account." You understood then that the line ran on under the water, and that every ticket you had ever clipped had gone somewhere out there.
You punched the blank one with the old clippers. The sea drew back from the platform edge like a sheet being folded, and she slid down the long spiral of her tail, turning once to wave. The water settled over the rails, smooth and quiet. In the morning the board still read CARRICK SANDS, but the ledger had a new line in your own hand, and the nib of your pen was furred with salt.
