Paisley seahorse ink drawing
Colour · Flash
A seahorse outline is filled with dense decorative patterns, including paisley shapes, circles, dots, scrolls and a fan-like pattern on the tail fin. The linework is fine and even, built from dotwork and small motifs, with no shading. The single blue ink stands out against a plain off-white background, with the design centred and filling the frame.

Tamsin had been counting dots since the tide turned at dawn, and the ledger in front of her had stopped making sense an hour ago. The harbour gauge at Brixham Reach logged the water level in tiny blue circles, one for every hand's breadth, and somebody long before her had decorated the margins with paisley swirls that looked as though they were trying to say something.

Her grandmother had called them tide-curls. Each swirl pointed the way the current ran under the old pier, and each ring marked the place where a seahorse had been netted, tagged and let go. Tamsin traced the largest curl with a fingernail. The ink had bled into the paper like a bruise, but the pattern held, fine and even, every dot placed by a hand that had never once been in a hurry.
On the last page was the seahorse itself, drawn in the corner by a clerk who must have been bored. Its tail ended in a tight spiral and its fin fanned out like a folded umbrella. Tamsin set its dots against the gauge readings and found they matched the spring tides of the year the pier went under.
She took the ledger down to the slipway at low water, where the sea had left a rope of kelp across the stones. Following the curls, she walked out past the rusted lamp post until the water reached her ankles, and there, half-buried in silt, lay a brass tag stamped with the same spiral. She knelt and wiped it clean. Behind her the tide was already coming back, and for once she did not hurry.
