Mermaid with flowing hair line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a mermaid with long, wavy hair that swirls around her head and shoulders. Her fish tail curls up and ends in a ruffled fin at the bottom of the frame. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the drawing sits on a plain white background.

The herring boats came back short that February, and Walter Penhale blamed the weather until the night his son hauled a wet net onto the quay and found it tangled with hair. Not weed. Hair, long and pale and wound through the mesh in loops, as if someone had combed it there on purpose.

Nobody in Porthenna would touch it. Old Mrs Tregear, who kept the chapel key and the only clean kettle in the village, said the sea kept what it was owed and the hair belonged to a woman who had lost her comb. So Walter cut the net free, carried the knotted mess up the hill, and left it on the step of the lighthouse cottage, where the keeper's widow, Ruth Abbot, sewed sailcloth for half the fleet.
Ruth spent a week combing it out. Each evening the strands had shifted, curled in on themselves and drifted toward the window as though the room were under water. On the seventh night she worked loose the last knot and found a small brass comb wedged deep at the root. She set it on the sill, and in the morning the comb was gone and the boats came in full.
The herring still ran thin most years after that, but the nets came up clean, and on the lighthouse step some mornings there was a single wet curl of pale hair, salt still in it, waiting for someone to comb it out.
